~ Confederate States of America ~
This section is just going to be “some” of my CSA favorites. I am not going to list all Civil War buttons. There will be a pattern depiction and some reference information including Albert & Tice reference numbers. Enjoy!

Size: 21mm
Albert’s: CS-50 RV:350
Tice’s: CSA G250A.1

Isabela’s Notes: There is a large Dotted border Confederate Flag in the center. Confederate Army is in capital Roman font letters in the legend above. The Adjunct Generals Department’s initials, “A G D” is written horizontally across the lower legend. The high relief pattern is set on an evenly lined field. This button was made in Paris.

Albert’s: CS-41.B RV: 50
Tice’s: CS G287A.1
Present Condition: A Dug Specimen, Good Planchet Condition, A Good High Relief Pattern Remains.
Isabela’s Notes: This is another rare local manufactured button that was intended for CSA officers. The button depicts a Confederate Eagle facing right on an evenly lined field. In the Eagles left talon is a Wreath. In the Eagles right talon is Two Arrows.
1860-65 CONFEDERATE CAVALRY “Jeb Stuart Button”
Color: Brownish-Red With Gilt Remnants.

Size: 24 mm
Albert’s: CS 144 RV: 350
Tice’s: CSC 250A.1
Present Condition: A Dug Specimen, Good Planchet Condition, A Good High Relief Pattern Remains.
Isabela’s Notes: For some reason Civil War collectors call it a “Jeb Stuart” button. This is one of the most desirable and rarest buttons to obtain by Civil War button collectors. Most found specimens are dug. There are several die variants in which the depiction of the flag is slightly different. The button’s pattern depicts a Confederate Flag with a Circle of 13 Stars. The Confederate States initials, “CSA” is in the legend above, and a pair of Crossed Sabers is below the flag. The high relief pattern is set on a plain convex field with a thin edge border.
1860-65 CONFEDERATE NAVY OFFICER
Color: Golden Brown
Metal: Convex, 2-Piece, Raised Design, Gilt Brass.
Size: 22.3mm
Albert’s: CS 53 RV: 75
Tice’s: CSN 206A.1
Present Condition: A Dug Specimen, Strong Planchet Condition, Strong High Relief Pattern Remains.
Isabela’s Notes: This was probably made by Smith, Kemp & Wright (Isaacs02). Unlike other CSN buttons, it was not produced by Firmin, and has an inferior Gilt Finish quality. The button depicts a set of Crossed Cannons with a Single Band on each cannon. There is a Large Fouled Anchor and the Flukes Extend Past the Cannons. The initials for Confederate States Navy, “C S N” is in-scripted in the lower legend under the anchor’s crown. The high relief pattern is set on an evenly spaced lined field with a Pipe Rope Edge. Albert notes that this specimen made by Isaacs is one of the rarer specimens to find.
1860-65 CONFEDERATE ARMY OFFICER

Size: 16.6mm
Albert’s: CS-88 RV: 75
Tice’s: CSG213Am.1
Present Condition: A Dug Specimen, Strong Planchet Condition, Strong High Relief Pattern Remains.
Isabela’s Notes: A Confederate local made. The initials for Confederate States, “C S” is above, and, “A” for America is below. The letters are in high relief on a plain field. A button prized by diggers. Hard to find without a face push.

1860-65 CONFEDERATE ARMY OFFICER
Color: A Greenish Brown.
Metal: Convex, 2-Piece, Raised Design, Gilt Brass.
Size: 22.26 mm
Albert’s: 22 RV: 20
Tice’s: CS 257A.1
Present Condition: A Dug Specimen, Strong Planchet Condition, A Strong High Relief Pattern Remains.
Isabela’s Notes: This button is believed to be made by Casimir Rouyer. Very similar to Tice’s CS 254, but the eagle is holding three arrows instead of two. This button depicts a Relaxed Eagle facing right on an evenly lined field. There are 12 Five Point Stars encircling the eagle. There is 1 Star isolated in the bottom legend. The Eagle is holding Three Arrows in it’s talon. The high relief pattern is set on a convex field with a thin edge border.
Dug in Fredericksburg, VA
1861-65 Army of Confederate States Texas Lone Star with CS Initials
Color: A Yellowish-Brown.
Metal: Convex, One-Piece with Integral Shank, Cast Brass.
Size: 21.43mm. Coat Size
Albert’s Number: TX 26: RV 50
Tice’s Number: TX 256A.1
Variation: Five Point Lone Star / CS for Confederate States / Non-Paralled Rays.
Present Condition: An Excavated Specimen, Strong Planchet Condition, A Strong High Relief Pattern Remains.
Isabela’s Notes: This is a Confederate Local “Wartime” manufactured button that was crudely made by T. Miller of Houston for Texas Troops during the Civil War. The button’s pattern depicts a large Five Point Lone Star with the star’s points reaching the outside circling edge border. Within the star’s center is a depressed well with the raised initials,“CS” for Confederate States. Outside of the star is a series of Non-Paralled Rays. The high relief pattern is set on a low-convex field with a raised edge border. This design has become a real collectors favorite with both Texas and Civil War Button Collectors. Specimens are around, but expensive since rarely available.
Reverse Button Analysis: This is a concave one-piece button with integral shank (drilled after cast). The shank is original, straight, and intact. (Blank Southern161).
Excavated in the defensive camps on the Gulf Coast near Houston, TX.

Obverse: This is a collector’s favorite among the rare locals produced during the war. Un-dug specimens fetch a premium.
